The TMA Group is
a public-private partnership committed to providing environmentally
friendly, affordable, reliable, and safe mobility options for
Middle Tennesseans. Formed in 1988 as a non-profit (501c3) organization,
The TMA Group was the first transportation management association
in the Southeast and the 35th in the nation.
Over the years, The TMA has engaged in a number of programs and
innovative research projects including: starting Tennessee’s
first Emergency Ride Home program; studying global warming and
the potential impact of Transportation Demand Management (TDM)
measures; developing a bicycle major route plan; participating
in a corridor-wide congestion management program during interstate
reconstruction; performing an FTA study on corporate amenities
and TDM; and conducting pilot telecommute programs.
In 1992, The TMA Group was admitted as a voting member of the
Nashville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical
Coordinating Committee. The TMA Group worked with the Tennessee
Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration
in the development and implementation of corridor-wide congestion
management measures during the widening of I-65 in both 1993 and
1997. Upon the request of TMA and Franklin, the 1997 project included
Tennessee's first incident management service patrol. Major research
conducted for the Federal Transit Administration in 1994 helped
define the role of amenities at the workplace play in supporting
transit ridership and contributed to the national Liveable Communities
Movement. The TMA Group worked with the City of Franklin in the
development of Franklin Transportation Operations Center. The
TMA Group developed a Transportation Enhancement proposal on behalf
of the City of Franklin for a pedestrian bridge over the Harpeth
River to link Historic Main Street to Pinkerton Park and a major
Civil War site. The bridge was completed in 1999.
Currently, The TMA Group manages a vanpool fleet, in partnership
with Williamson County, the City of Franklin and the Regional
Transportation Association consisting of 40+ vehicles providing
mobility to commuters in nine area counties.
After five years of thorough studies with the City of Franklin,
the Franklin Transit Authority’s public transportation system
– the Franklin Trolleys – was launched in May 2003.
The TMA Group is the manager of the system. The system was the
first new transit system in the State of Tennessee since 1986
and the first in Williamson County since the mid-1980’s.
The TMA Group is leading the way in bettering the air quality
of Williamson County and the surrounding region through education,
programs and services. During 2004, the Clean Air Partnership
of Williamson County, a public outreach initiative of The TMA
Group and Williamson County Government to help combat the problems
of poor air quality was launched. Currently 52 leading corporations
and businesses are partners.
